On Tuesday, March 12, news broke that a number of wealthy individuals, celebrities, and CEOs had been indicted by the FBI for participating in a multi-million-dollar college scam that guaranteed their children’s acceptance into prestigious colleges. At the forefront of the college admissions scandal (also known as Operation Varsity Blues) is Fuller House actress and Hallmark sweetheart Lori Loughlin, but there was actually una familia latina involved. 

Manuel and Elizabeth Henriquez allegedly paid $25,000 for a “protcor” to sit down with their daughter Isabelle while she took her SATs in October 2015. Pero la niña was given the correct answers as she took the test, helping her get accepted into Georgetown, according to officials.

“After the exam, he ‘gloated’ with Elizabeth Henriquez and her daughter about the fact that they had cheated and gotten away with it,” the 204-page complaint reads.

Prosecutors called the college admissions cheating scandal a case of the “widening corruption of elite college admissions.”

Although this college admissions scandal is straight out of una telenovela, with the wealthy taking advantage of their resources to “bribe, lie, and cheat” in the name of love, Isabelle’s name stands out more than others because the Catholic prep school student is accused of willingly participating in the scheme — a factor that isn’t true for a majority of the students involved.

Despite her 320-point improvement, resulting in a score of 1900 out of 2400, it still wasn’t high enough to earn a spot at Georgetown without a stellar list of extracurriculars and recommendations. But the Edge College & Career Network, or The Key for short, also took care of these elements.

Isabelle was admitted into the university as a tennis recruit after head tennis coach Gordon Ernst was bribed with $950,000 paid by The Key, according to federal investigators. The now-college junior allegedly wrote a letter to the coach speaking about her summer of tennis playing, although she didn’t played in high school, and she also rewrote her college essay to focus on her “talent.”

It’s estimated that the Henriquezs paid a total of $425,000 to The Key, which also included a $400,000 “donation” to the organization after Isabelle’s acceptance to the esteemed school in October 2016.

Al momento, Manuel and Elizabeth are facing felony charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, which could result in a five year sentence. While Manuel has “voluntarily stepped aside” as chairman and CEO of Hercules Capital, la dominicana may be expelled from Georgetown.
