Beauty Guru Kathleen Lights Made Me Buy It and Here are My Thoughts

Twenty-seven-year-old Kathleen Fuentes, better known as Kathleen Lights, is a famous, self-made beauty guru (sorry, Kylie Jenner) with more than four million Youtube subscribers. Not only is she known for her amazing blending skills, but her laid-back personality is so relatable to otras latinas. She posts new videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday — coincidentally, the same days my Sephora cart fills up.

In the years I’ve been following Kathleen Lights, I’ve probably bought $3,000 worth of makeup that was recommended by la cubana. While there are many products that have become cult-favorites, some didn’t live up to the expectation. Scroll through to read my review on these Kathleen-approved picks, alongside the Latina Watch star rating.

1. Touch in Sol No Poreblem Primer

For starters, whoever came up with this product’s name, bravo! No poreblem, indeed. Free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, this cruelty-free, vegan, and hypoallergenic silky primer is a definite must-have in any beauty enthusiasts collection. At only $18, this complexion product made my skin feel smooth and kept oil at bay. Gracias, Kathleen!

2. Morphe Continuous Setting Mist

Behold: Kathleen Light’s holy grail setting spray. With its fine air-powered mist, it promises to set liquid and powder products, while leaving a radiant finish. Okay, I won’t lie, it does have the finest mist I’ve seen in any setting spray (más fino que el anillo de J.Lo). However, all it did was blend my makeup without increasing the longevity, forcing me to use another spray on top.

3. Marc Jacobs O!Mega Bronzer

This is a true beauty splurge worth spending big bucks on! Yes, it does set you back a few dolares, but its outstanding performance makes up for the negative bank account balance. Not only does it come with a whopping 2.26 grams of product that will last you a lifetime (trust me, I’ve used this bronzer everyday and barely made a dent!), it also smells like pure coconuts. The best part? The bronzer gives my cheekbone an instant, J.Lo-esque glow without having to be out in the sun, exposed to harmful UV rays.

4. RCMA No Color Powder

Bueno, bonito y barato. At only $12, the RMCA No Color Powder is said to set your makeup seamlessly and keep you flawless for hours. For me, however, I prefer a more mattifying powder for my problem areas — like the Milk Makeup Blur + Set Matte Loose Setting Powder. While this isn’t my favorite, I do recommend it for anyone looking for cheaper alternatives to popular setting powders.

5. Twinkling Lights Eye Foursome

When I learned Kathleen Lights was collaborating with ColourPop, I knew I had to try it for myself. The eyeshadows were creamy, pigmented, and looked great individually as an all-over eyelid look. I did a wear test and slept with one of the shock shadows two nights in a row. (Kids, don’t try this at home.) To my surprise, I could still see some glitter remnants on the third day. The only downside is that although it claims to have zero fallout, it does smear a bit upon application.

6. Tatcha Silk Canvas

This $52 primer promises to be the solution for pores, oiliness, and dullness. However, if you have combination skin, your T-zone will hate this product. Even though I tried this primer several times, it kept making my skin so oily I could fry some platanos on my face. Keep in mind Kathleen Lights does have dry skin, so I can see how this product would work for that skin type. Thank you, next!

7. Kaja Cheeky Stamp Bendable Blushes

Whether you want to use a powder or cream bronzer, this paraben, sulfate, and phthalates-free blush blends like a dream. Not to mention, it comes with an adorable heart-shaped sponge that acts like a stamp for some fun application. A little goes a long way, so make sure you’re light handed when applying. For me, the only downside is the size. The blush comes in a bulky packaging that can be annoying to travel with.

8. Dose of Colors Lipstick in Aftermath

This semi-matte lipstick glides onto your lips as easy as your mom’s chancla slides out of her hand. While it made my lips feel super soft, it settled on my fine lines and didn’t last as long as it claims. It advises you to exfoliate your lips before use and to avoid greasy and oily foods, but I personally need a lipstick that will stick with me through thick and thin pernil.

9. Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

Before the Jouer Cosmetics Essential High Coverage Liquid Concealer rocked the beauty community, this was the holy grail concealer for many YouTubers and beauty junkies like myself. I still enjoy using this concealer because of its lightweight, yet high coverage formula. With 30 different shades, this product covers the entire skin tone spectrum (Well. Done. Tarte). I personally don’t like the sponge applicator; I prefer to use a brush instead.

10. Dior Airflash Spray Foundation

Although I had high expectations for this foundation (hello, Dior), this was a hard pass for me. Sixty-two dollars for a foundation that makes my skin look bumpy and cakey? No, gracias! The brand claims the foundation gives you a soft, velvety complexion, but it did the opposite for my skin.

12. Anastasia Norvina Eyeshadow Palette

Despite it being the lowest rated ABH palette on Sephora, I have to admit this is one of my favorites. With several finishes — ranging from mattes to shimmers — this gorgeous palette will give you high color payoff in just one swipe. The 14-pan palette does have a lot of fallout, so I always do my eye makeup first to prevent it from ruining my face.

Kathleen Lights recently launched “Cafecito con Kathleen,” which airs every other Thursday, where you can see some more of her Cuban roots in action. One of her latest video features how to make a delicious abuelita-approved vegan arroz con leche (Yum!). You can become a member for $4.99 a month here.
