Iconic Mexican-American Journalist, Maria Elena Salinas Gets Real About Being a Latina In Media
Maria Elena Salinas has been called the “Voice of Hispanic America” by The New York Times and is one of the most sought after Hispanic female journalists in the United States. Though the Mexican-American broadcaster’s three decade career has been highlighted in mainstream media, her journey to success was far from easy and she opened up about it in a 2018 TEDx Talk.
Through her passion, she was able to push through social, emotional, and cultural barriers to becomes the journalist she is today. During a TEDx Talk event in Los Angeles, the former anchor of the highly rated Noticiero Univision got real about her professional journey. From marketing to TV broadcasting, Salinas created a bridge between her culture and career, while serving the Hispanic community one impactful story at a time.
“Women have to work twice as hard as their male counterparts, wherein Hispanic media, we have to work three times as hard,” said Salinas.
She goes on to speak about balance and equality throughout life. Like a true powerhouse, Salinas explains to the audience that latinas are the lowest paid minority in the industry. With a new era of latinas continuing to push the envelope, it’s important to remember our foundation of courage began with Hispanic voices like Maria Elena Salinas.
