Selena Quintanilla Texas Holiday

Selena Might Become an Official Texas State Holiday

Tejanos may soon have a new state holiday honoring la leyenda Selena Quintanilla and we’re here for it. While we were still singing along to Kacey Musgraves‘ rendition of “Como La Flor,” State Representative Ana-Maria Ramos introduced a bill designating April 16 as “Selena Quintanilla Pérez Day” in Texas.

“April 16 is Selena Quintanilla Perez Day in memory of the contributions to Tejano music of Selena Quintanilla Pérez, an award-winning singer and recording artist,” the bill reads. “Selena Quintanilla Perez Day may be regularly observed by appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

The bill needs to go through a few rounds of legal votes, but if passed, the new law would going into effect on September 1, giving us enough time to get ready for the first Selena Quintanilla Pérez Day on April 16, 2020.

The date carries significance because it was the Tex-Mex singer’s birthday. Born in 1971, Selena broke barriers singing Spanish and English original hits. She revolutionized concert performances with her revealing outfits and signature dance movesLa chicana continues to effortlessly bring us joy, now through hilarious memes immortalizing her priceless face expressions.

It goes without saying that the beloved Mexican Madonna still lives on in the hearts of all her fans — new and longtime listeners alike. Although then-Governor George W. Bush named April 16 “Selena Day” in Texas only three weeks after her tragic death in 1995, this bill will be one more way the Grammy Award winning singer is forever remembered. And we love that Chris Perez is also on board with the plan!
