Bill Nye Surprises AOC at SXSW and Talks Climate Change

South by Southwest (SXSW) kicked off in Austin this past Friday, March 8 and of course, nuestra latina favorita Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez packed the house for her Saturday talk. The 29-year-old newly appointed Congresswoman discussed climate change and touched upon the Green New Deal she helped introduce in early February. But before wrapping up her talk, she had one last question from a surprise guest – Bill Nye.

The New York-native was left speechless by the unexpected appearance and immediately got on her feet, cheering for the famed TV personality.

The 63-year-old mechanical engineer began by sharing his theory behind the lack of climate change acknowledgment and therefore, the slow progress to continue working towards a solution for the environmental issue, which relates to immigration — it all stems from fear.

“I’m a white guy,” Nye said. “I think the problem on both sides is fear. People of my ancestry are afraid to pay for everything as immigrants come into this country. People who work at the diner in Alabama are afraid to try to ask for what is reasonable. So, do you have a plan to work with people in Congress that are afraid? I think that’s what’s going on with many of the conservatives, especially when it comes to climate change. People are just afraid of what will happen if we try to make these big changes.

AOC estaba alegre to hear Nye’s question and took a moment to celebrate him before giving her thoughts. “One of the keys to dismantling fear is dismantling a zero-sum mentality,” she answered. “It means the rejection outright of the logic that says someone else’s gain necessitates my loss and that my gain must necessitate someone else’s loss … We can give without a take.”

Ocasio-Cortez continued by reminding everyone that investing in climate change will be beneficial to every single individual, regardless of political stance, and there are no shortcuts when it comes to the issue. She also highlighted the importance of having courage because, like anything else, the beginning is always the hardest, but once the first steps are taken, it comes easier.

“We cannot allow ourselves to be governed by fear anymore … ‘I’m not going to allow fear to control me anymore. I’m going to stand up and do the courageous thing,'” she said.
