Anthony Borges And Five Other Parkland School Shooting Survivors Featured on New York Magazine
On February 14, Nikolas Cruz, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, open fire with a semi-automatic rifle killing seventeen people. Now, almost nine months later, six parkland students– including Anthony Borges, who was credited to saving 20 lives– are gracing the cover of New York Magazine’s latest issue.

Exposing his surgical scars and colostomy bag, Borges is seen on the black-and-white cover of New York Magazine’s October 29 issue. The 15-year-old save the lives of about 20 people when he barricaded a classroom door and used his body as a shied during the shooting. The Venezuelan student was shot five times, which included bullets that tore into his lungs, abdomen and legs. Because of the gravity of his wounds, Borges was the last Parkland survivor to be released from the hospital.
The physical therapy is helping a lot. A lot of the exercises are like the things you do before a soccer game. Still, I can’t feel my left foot. I’ve gotten skinnier, and when I stand up, I have trouble breathing. The goal is just to be able to move my entire body normally. I can’t run, and I want to run. I’m doing homeschooling now. I’m not sure when I’ll go back to school. I don’t want to; I don’t feel safe. I don’t talk about it with anybody — I get really upset. I can’t talk about it with my friends. I did what I had to do — that’s why I don’t like being called a hero. I want people to remember what happened as a miracle, from God.
Joining Borges on this memorable issue are five other Parkland School shooting survivors– Samantha Fuentes,18, Ashley Baez, 15, Isabel Chequer, 16, William Olson, 14, and Alexander Dworet, 15. Dworet, who was grazed in the back of the head by one of the bullets, lost his brother, Nicholas, during the shooting.
