Michelle Barraza is breaking barriers and stereotypes as a Latina in Powersports
When it comes to Powersports, most people envision a male-dominant arena filled with engines and vehicles not apt for a lady. However, Michelle Barraza is a Latina pro-off road racer living her dreams through curves and shift of gears. She is breaking down barriers, demystifying the sport, and empowering women through speed and turns. But her passion for off-roading comes from an early age. “It’s a sport a bit intimidating,” said Michelle who began her racing career through a Cancer Awareness Program race called Racing for Boobs.
“I wanted to do it in honor of my grandmother who passed away. The first time I won, I got a spark and decided to never stop.” However, the road is always filled with roadblocks and detours. The Mexican racer is confident that your limitation is in your mind but a good race comes with challenges, “The most challenging thing has been to remove the perspective of why a woman wants to race,” adds Michelle. She is also an advocate for The Empowersports Women’s Riding Council, where she helps brings awareness about inclusivity and female representation in Powersports.
Aside from racing, Michelle is a stay-at-home mother to her six children and has a husband that supports her all the way. Every Polaris racer makes sure to implement high safety measures to avoid accidents. From safety harnesses to fire extinguishers, the RZR racer knows that safety is key for a winning race. “I want to make a change in our culture and as a mom, I want to motivate other women to follow their dreams. I want to change the perspective of Mexican women.”

Next year, Michelle will compete in San Felipe on the Baja California Peninsula where she will cover 250 miles of adrenaline. Due to the global pandemic, many races have been canceled but Michelle is expected to participate in the 2021 Score Baja 250 on February 14. Every race comes with preparation and one of Michelle’s strategies is to study the road beforehand. “I study the roads and curves because of the rocks. Every detail matters and can affect the race. No matter how good your vehicle is.”
One of the best things about participating in Powersports is that you can invite your “comadre” as your co-pilot. Michelle wants to encourage women who are interested in the life behind the wheel to attend a race. “Once that spark lights up you will never want to be the passenger again. Never let a male sport make you feel insecure.”
