Jearnest Corchado leads the Sneakerhead gang in Netflix new comedy series

Sneakers, kicks, tennis shoes, sneaks. There are many terms to name your streetwear shoes. But for Jearnest Corchado, who stars in the female lead role for Netflix’s new comedy series Sneakerheads, is more than a footgear. Before getting this rewarding role, the Puerto Rican actress played different characters in Crave: The Fast Life, Cucuy: The Boogeyman and recently Little America. In Sneakerheads which is set to premiere on Netflix on September 25, Jearnest reveals her true personality through Nori’s character, a boss lady who runs the streets and is the main connection to every Hollywood A-list celebrity in search for the ultimate sneakers.

The series follows the lives of ex-sneakerhead Devin (Allen Maldonado), who is now a stay-at-home dad, Bobby (Andrew Bachelor) and Nori (Jearnest Corchado) who is an ultra-savvy sneaker enthusiast and traverse the world in search of the ever-elusive Zeroes, a “holy grail” of sorts for collectors. “Sometimes sneakers are really important for people because of what they represent for them. Sometimes they carry an emotional connection,’ shared Jearnest exclusively for LatinaWatch who now understands the connection between value and culture for sneakerheads.

Since the age of eight, Jearnest has been in search of lead roles but despite the numerous rejections, Sneakerheads was in the way of her oeuvre. “It is a beautiful blessing. It’s like any other role, you have to prepare, be present and bring your A-game. Having the opportunity to be a series regular for the first time, was a dream come true,” revealed the actress.

The series hopes to attract not only sneaker enthusiasts but also those who crave a good comedy. For the first time, Jearnest will showcase her masculine and feminine personality through Nori’s character who wears exclusive brands, from Yeezy to Jordans. Though the actress will don all sorts of outfits and accouterments for the show, Jearnest is more of a Doc Marten type of girl in real life. “I feel like these Docs are me and represent who I am. They are so reliable and have worn them to so many festivals and places.”

Aside from her footwear choices, Jearnest is a big believer in supporting the Latinx community. Though the entertainment industry continues to be stereotypical through films and series with Latinx culture, Jearnest is here to change the narrative and elevate Latino stories. “We are more than that, we are humans. We have a lot to say. We have stories very similar to any other human around the world,” says the actress. Whether she stars as a lead superhero in an action film or rom-com, Jearnest hopes to bring inclusivity and powerful stories through each character she plays.

Currently, the Puerto Rican actress has been writing her own songs during the global pandemic and hopes to release a bilingual album in the near future. But what has kept her grounded is her family in Puerto Rico. Sometimes an offbeat destination and peaceful respite can bring balance to your life. “Life is much more than running around and being trapped in the rat race. It is important to take time to reflect and enjoy the little things.”
