These Artists Beautifully Celebrated Selena at the 2019 Houston Rodeo

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is coming to an end this Sunday, March 17, after running for two weeks and it was a year of memorable performances dedicated to the Queen of Tejano. It goes without saying that Selena is always present at this special event — remembered as a singer ahead of her time, but also as being a record-breaker for attendance at the Astrodome. It’s estimated that 64,831 fans gathered to see her on February 26, 1995.

This year will be one for the books thanks to Kacey Musgraves, Prince Royce, Cardi B, and Camila Cabello. Here’s how each artist remembered la Reina during their time onstage.

1. Kacey Musgraves

Grammy-winning country singer Musgraves took the stage on Tuesday, February 26, and made us all orgullosos with her flawless rendition of Selena’s “Como La Flor.” The 30-year-old singer glowed in a purple light show remembering the beloved artist almost 24 years after her death.

“I love the queen Selena just as much as you do,” the fellow Texas native told the 53,000-strong crowd encouraging them to belt out the lyrics with her. “This is our chance to honor her, by singing as loud as we can together.”

2. Prince Royce

One day after Musgraves’ tribute to Selena, el cantante dominicano sang Selena’s iconic mariachi ballad, “No Me Queda Más,” to more than 51,000 fans. The bachata star has always been vocal about his admiration and love for the late-singer.

3. Cardi B

The “I Like It” rapper graced the stage on Friday, March 2, in a pink cowgirl outfit and broke a Houston Rodeo record previously held by Selena. The Grammy winner performed for 75,580 people — the most ever in the Astrodome’s history!

Cardi B admitted to feeling pressure due to feeling sick and not being able to rehearse beforehand. But seeing a picture of the Mexican Madonna backstage reassured her it was going to be a great night.
