5 Colombian Series to Binge Watch On Netflix

While it’s been 25 years since the death of Pablo Escobar, Colombia continues to be plagued by a reputation for crime and drugs. Despite Colombia’s great efforts to stop the illicit drug trade and move past Escobar, Hollywood is fixated on the country’s past drug-fueled conflict. Shows like Narcos and Sin Senos No Hay Paraiso, give action-junkies at home a look into the violence that usually stems from the drug trade.

While Colombia is often recognized by it’s most notorious criminal, there are many fictional figures that are now hitting the mainstream. From stories about aspiring artists to Pablo Escobar’s past, check out these five Colombian series you’ll want to binge watch this month!

1. La Reina Del Flow

If you love all things reggeaton, you’re going to want to watch this series! In a country like Colombia, which is fueled with drugs and the cartel, La Reina del Flow is a music-center series that shows how the urban genre has helped kids steer away from violence. After being wrongly imprisoned for seventeen years for transporting drugs, Yeimy Montoya returns to Colombia with the sole objective of revenge. The talented songwriter is forced to change her identity to seeks justice against Charly Flow, a famous reggeaton singer and his uncle, for her downfall and family’s death. 

2. Lady La Vendedora De Rosas

Sadly, it’s not always a happy ending. Inspired by the true story of Colombian film star Lady Tabares, Lady, La Vendedora De Rosas follows the story of a young girl on the streets of Medellín who helps sell stolen roses to pay the rent. While at an orphanage, after her mother lost custody, Lady is casted by a director, Marco Garcia, for his new film. Despite receiving several awards and earning an entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 71st Academy Awards, the film’s success was not enough to get Lady Tabares away from her past.

3. Pablo Escobar, El Patrón Del Mal

Before Narcos, there was Pablo Escobar, El Patrón Del Mal. The 2012 series followed the story of the notorious druglord from his childhood in Valle de Aburra to his rise in the drug trade. While Narcos does a great job of showing viewers Escobar from the late 70s, when he first began manufacturing cocaine, El Patrón Del Mal gives fans of the shows an inside look at the mind of the drug kingpin from an early age.

4. Undercover Law

Who runs the world? Girls! Originally from Colombia’s Caracol International network, Undercover Law follows three secret agents, Sandra, Amelia and Tatiana, who live under false identities to infiltrate the lives of Colombia’s most dangerous criminals. After being caught transporting drugs, Alejandra is forced to becomes an informant to avoid jail time. Trust us, this all-female police team will have you on edge all season long.

5. La Niña

Based on a true story, La Niña follows the story of a girl who was kidnapped and forced to be a fighter by the Colombian guerrilla. After years of witnessing violence, she manages to escape the violent group but not the psychological damage of warfare.
