This woman-owned face mask brand helped cure my acne

As we continue to live in the pandemic, masks are very much still a necessity. They help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by limit exposure to respiratory droplets and particles. While masks are effective at keeping us safe, prolonged wear causes breakouts in the areas where the mask sits on our faces. We’ve talked about “maskne” before and how to prevent it, but I’m here to show how important it is to not only change your skincare routine but your masks — and I got the pictures to prove it!

First of all, let me start by saying that I don’t have the best skin. My skin is acne-prone and sensitive, so when I started wearing masks last year, it was acne overload for me. When I tell you that my skin was bad, it was worse than high-school-drama-breakout bad. I want to apologize in advance for the pesadillas, but I want to show the serious difference.

This picture was taken May 2020, just two months after wearing N95 and disposable masks. Like most people who suffer from maskne, my breakouts were caused by the moisture and sweat that were trapped on my skin when wearing these for an extended period of time. Yes, I tried several acne products but none seem to alleviate the breakouts. After months of struggling and following all the advice I found online, I discovered silk masks.

I came across a Latina-owned boutique called Blanka Boutique, where I saw the cutest silk masks. Reading about how silk masks are less abrasive on the skin, I decided to purchase every color to put these masks to the test. I replaced my disposable masks and started wearing these silk mask daily. Quickly, I began to notice that my skin was healing. I was no longer getting painful new breakouts, the existing pimples were going away, and my skin was no longer feeling irritated when wearing the silk masks all day. In just one month of using silk masks, I had a clear complexion.

PLUS: The science behind holistic skincare, Bakuchiol and other skin mysteries your BFF doesn’t know about

Is it brujería, you ask? Not quite! Unlike disposable masks, masks made out of silk are cooling and hypoallergenic. They also don’t absorb as much moisture, which prevents your skin from drying out. My skin has been clear ever since and my confidence came back. I also wash my masks bi-weekly now, just like skincare expert Priscilla Jiminian recommended. I also have enough silk masks to wear a different one every day. I could not be happier with my decision to switch to silk masks, and I recommend that you do too! Not to mention they also have the cutest accessories to go with it!
