Alexa Demie on being part of the make-up decisions for her Euphoria character

If there is one show that set new beauty trends for 2019, it was Euphoria. From bold lid colors to pearl accents, every character from HBO series had a fierce makeup look to match their feisty personality — including Alexa Demie‘s character Maddy. In a recent interview with Vogue UK, the Mexican-America actress revealed that she was delighted to be able to help out with the make-up her character wears in Euphoria, which also stars Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, and Maude Apatow. As the daughter of a make-up artist and a cosmetic aficionado herself, the star was excited to give her creative input for Maddy’s look.

“It’s truly a dream come true that the creator of the show is so interested in make-up and actually sat down and had full conversations with me about it because you usually have no say in your make-up,” she said. “I’ve been compiling looks that I’ve dreamed of doing on private Tumblrs and in folders since middle school, and now I finally get to do them.”

For Alexa, it was important that her character’s look was a reflection of her troubled life, from her tumultuous relationship with Nate to her parent’s loveless marriage. “From day one, Maddy was the one who was going to have all the looks. She started wearing make-up young and for her, as well as for me, she didn’t have the best home life, so it was an escape as well. Make-up was this mask she would put on for confidence because she didn’t have it at her core,” Alexa added.

Like Maddy, the 25-year-old also started experimenting with makeup from an early age thanks to her mother’s work as a makeup artist. “When I was 12, she had to do this 15-minute look in front of the people at MAC, where she worked, in order to become a pro artist. Her model had cancelled and so she asked if she could bring me in,” she said, adding, “So I was sitting up on a podium, and she completely blocked my brows, did a blue lid and a red lip. It was gorgeous. She also taught me about cleanliness, moisturising, SPF, and drinking lots of water. If I came home and I had make-up on and I went to bed, she would wake me up and make me wash my face.”

The 25-year-old, who has also starred in the film Waves, believes makeup shouldn’t be about following the rules, instead, should be a unique form of self-expression. “You know, we shouldn’t be pushing so much for our appearance to be everything. We should have fun with make-up and use it as an art and as an expression, but don’t use it as a mask to hide what you’re feeling or who you truly are,” she stated, adding, “That’s why I always like to say to people, ‘Look at my make-up and maybe use it as an inspiration to do your own, but you don’t have to copy it exactly. Do your own version of it.’ Trends aren’t going away, they just need to be taken a little lighter because you don’t have to look like anything.”
