According to El Nuevo Día, the “Taki Taki” singer’s lawyers claimed that the late Kevin Fret was behind the extortion.

Our attorney confirmed yesterday that urban artist Ozuna was extorted through an intimate video filmed when he was a minor. This video was edited with the objective of causing even more damage. [During] the time of the extortion scheme, we filed a complaint and all the legal measures are being taken, as sending and publishing videos of minors is a state and federal offense…. We hope that this will serve as an example and message to all teenagers and adults to protect their privacy and avoid these things so as to [avoid] such regrettable situations.

Ozuna’s label and management firm, Dimelo Vi told Rolling Stones

LatinaWatch has not seen the video mentioned in the statement.

Fret reportedly threatened the Puerto Rican singer on multiple social platforms that he would release the video unless there was compensation. According to Primera Hora, the singer transferred roughly $50,000 into Fret’s account. Following the payment, the star went to the FBI offices in Miami to file a complaint against Fret. The singer reported the extortion plot in 2017, as reported by El Nuevo Dia.

“What happened was a mistake of the past. Like many young people, I made a mistake, fueled by ignorance,” said the singer in a statement. “Today, I’m not only sorry for what happened, but I condemn it. That’s why I looked for help and I am certain everything will be cleared. Likewise, I’m following the process and am always willing to collaborate with authorities to prevent the evil that resulted from this big mistake. More importantly, I ask my family for forgiveness. They are my life’s priority and I will continue to fight for them always.”

Fret, who is reportedly guilty of extorting Ozuna, was shot and killed on January 10 in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Described as Latin Trap music’s first openly gay artist, Fret gained recognition with his single “Soy Asi,” which racked more than a million views on YouTube.

Ozuna’s manager Vicente Saaverda recently told Billboard that singer was not being investigated as a possible suspect for Fret’s murder.
