The Puerto Rican actress reflected back on her time before many knew her as the star from CW’s Jane The Virginwhich earned her a Golden Globe. She recalled feeling less than and marginalized as a young girl with big Hollywood dreams as she searched for actors who looked like her. “I felt very alone growing up. I didn’t feel represented. I didn’t feel a part of the conversation,” she explains. “And if you see yourself projected, you believe you are worthy, valuable,” she said to Cosmo.

In her latest project, Miss Bala, Rodriguez plays a badass Mexican-American who finds herself in the middle of a cartel crime. The action-packed film follows Rodriguez as she tries to rescue her cousin from human trafficking, and fights for her life along the way. Mark your calendars as Miss Bala is set to hit theaters on February 1st. The 34-year-old beauty made it her mission to continue to stand by her motto of Latinx representation. According to Gina most of the cast and crew on set were Latinx. But with great responsibility comes enormous pressure, as she reveals how she wants the film to be just as successful as Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians. If it bombs, Rodriguez admits just like white films, she’ll just make another one.

Along with preparing for a movie debut, the newly engaged star lets us in on how she knew her fiancé, Joe LoCicero was “the one”. Jokingly comparing him to her hashimoto’s disease disorder, she explains “It’s just a part of me. That’s how I feel with Joe.” Expressing her gratitude for their love, Rodriguez praises him for always helping her around the house to ease her anxiety.

In addition to being vulnerable about her struggles with anxiety, the Jane the Virgin actress made it clear how important self-love is. “I let go of the anxiety and the fear of not looking beautiful. Because it’s not about the picture. It’s about the fact that I stand on this cover with every Latina who wished she saw herself reflected,” the actress told Cosmo.

Honoring her fans and young Latinx, Rodriguez does not take her platform lightly. Knowing she represents many young Latinas today, the Miss Bala actress is owning her space in Hollywood, and we couldn’t be prouder. “Because it’s not my face—it’s the 55-million-plus girls who are like, ‘Holy shit! We belong.”

Be sure to catch, Miss Bala in movie theaters on February 1st.
